One strategy for every AI engine

AI Search Optimization: How to Get Your Brand Into AI Answers

AI search optimization is the work of getting your brand named and cited inside AI-generated answers. People also call it GEO (generative engine optimization), AEO (answer engine optimization) or AI SEO. It builds on SEO and adds four layers: crawl access, answer-ready pages, earned mentions and per-engine measurement.

Definition

What is AI search optimization? GEO, AEO and AI SEO explained

AI search optimization means shaping your site and your reputation so AI engines pick your pages as sources and name your brand in their answers. It covers Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, plus assistants that search the web, like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude.

The goal moves from ranking a link to being the source an answer is built on. An answer can quote you, cite you or name your brand without a link. All three count.

What is AI search optimization called?

Several names describe the same job:

GEOGenerative engine optimization. Common in research papers and agency writing.
AEOAnswer engine optimization. Grew out of featured snippets and voice answers.
AI SEOThe plain-English label for the same work.
Google's own guide calls AEO and GEO work "still SEO" from its point of view.Google Search Central, AI optimization guide, July 10, 2026

So the base is familiar. The reach is new: more engines, fewer clicks and citations from pages outside the classic top 10.

How it works

How AI search engines choose which sources to cite

Most AI engines search before they answer. Google calls this query fan-out, "a set of concurrent, related queries generated by the model." The reply is written from what those searches return.

Your questionhow to fix a lawn that's full of weeds
  • best herbicides for lawns
  • remove weeds without chemicals
  • how to prevent weeds in lawn

Fan-out example from Google's AI optimization guide.

Each sub-query is a chance to be picked. AI Mode's Deep Search can issue hundreds of searches (Google, May 20, 2025). Perplexity Deep Research runs dozens of searches over hundreds of sources (Perplexity, Feb 14, 2025).

Why ranking alone is no longer enough

Fan-out means the cited page is often not the one ranking for your main query. Two Ahrefs studies show the gap.

AI Overview citations from the top 10

37.9%

of URLs cited in AI Overviews rank in Google's top 10, down from about 76% in July 2025. Ahrefs links the drop to query fan-out.

Perplexity28.6%

AI search vs SEO

AI search optimization vs SEO: what changes and what stays

Most of SEO stays. Google says there are "no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode." Pages must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet (Google). Reach, clicks and measurement change.

Classic SEO compared with AI search optimization
TopicClassic SEOAI search optimization
GoalRank a URL for a queryGet cited and named inside the answer
QueryThe words the user typedA fan-out of related sub-queries
EnginesGoogle and Bing results pagesAI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Copilot
Off-siteBacklinksBacklinks plus genuine brand mentions where engines look
MeasurementPositions, clicks, CTRAI impressions in Search Console, citations per engine, value of visits

Clicks are the hard part. Pew found users clicked a result on 8% of visits with an AI summary, versus 15% without. They clicked a source inside the summary on 1% of visits (Pew Research, Jul 22, 2025). When an AI Overview shows, the top-ranking page gets 58% lower average CTR (Ahrefs, Feb 4, 2026).

Is SEO still worth it in 2026?

Yes. AI Overviews and AI Mode pick supporting links from Google's index, with no extra requirements. Ahrefs found 37.9% of AI Overview citations still rank in the top 10. Strong SEO gets you into the pool. The AI layers decide whether you get picked.

Is SEO dead now with AI?

No, but each click is harder to earn. Seer Interactive found brands cited in an AI Overview got 120% more organic clicks per impression than brands not cited. The study covered 5.47M queries across 53 brands (Seer, Apr 24, 2026).

Framework

The AI search engine optimization strategy: 4 layers

We group the work into four layers, in order: access, answers, authority and measurement. Each layer depends on the one before it. A page AI crawlers cannot fetch will never be cited, however well it is written.

01Access

Let engines fetch and show your pages

Google requires indexing and snippet eligibility. Assistants use their own crawlers, so robots.txt decides who reads you.

  • Key pages indexed and snippet-eligible
  • Rules for GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot set on purpose
  • Main content in the HTML, not only after JavaScript
02Answers

Write pages an engine can quote

Google asks for unique, non-commodity content (Google, May 21, 2025). Answer first, then prove it.

  • The main question answered in the first 40 to 60 words
  • Specs and comparisons in HTML tables and lists
  • Structured data that matches visible content
03Authority

Be the brand other sources mention

Engines cite what the wider web treats as a reference. In our plausible.io sample, youtube.com and reddit.com are among the domains AI Overviews cite most next to the brand.

  • Depth across a topic cluster
  • Genuine mentions in communities, video, reviews and press
  • One consistent brand name, backed by Organization data
04Measurement

Track each engine on its own

Engines differ widely. In our sample, AI Overviews cite plausible.io in 521 logged responses and ChatGPT in 31.

  • Search Console Generative AI reports for Google
  • A fixed prompt list, logged per engine, monthly
  • Value of visits, not only clicks

The five core strategies, in short

  1. Direct answersEngines lift self-contained passages, so answer first.
  2. Page structureHeadings, tables and lists make a page easy to quote.
  3. Topical authorityFan-out pulls sub-topics, so a covered cluster gives more chances.
  4. Traditional SEOGoogle lists no extra requirements for its AI features.
  5. External mentionsOnly 12% of assistant citations rank in Google's top 10.

Step by step

How to optimize your website for AI search, step by step

Start with access, fix the pages AI already cites, then build outward. These eight steps follow the four layers. The last three run for months.

  1. Check indexing and snippetsConfirm key pages are indexed and can show a snippet. Google lists nothing more for AI Overviews and AI Mode.
  2. Set AI crawler rules on purposeRead robots.txt line by line. Every rule for an AI crawler should match a decision you made.
  3. Turn on generative AI featuresGoogle requires your site to be included in Search generative AI features in Search Console.
  4. Answer real questions earlyAnswer each buyer question in the first 40 to 60 words, under a heading in their wording.
  5. Add matching structured dataUse Organization on the homepage and Article with author and dates on guides. Mark up only what the page shows.
  6. Refresh cited pages firstKeep the pages AI already cites current before writing new ones.
  7. Earn mentions where engines lookFind the domains cited next to you and contribute there for real.
  8. Measure per engine, monthlySearch Console for Google, logged answers for assistants, the same prompts each month.

Proven vs myth

AI search ranking factors: what is proven and what is myth

No one outside the engines knows the exact factors. Google says, "No third-party tool has access to our internal ranking or AI systems." The documented list is short.

What Google documents

  • Indexed and snippet-eligible. The only stated requirement for AI Overviews and AI Mode links.
  • Crawl and index access. One of Google's technical basics for AI search.
  • Preview controls. nosnippet and max-snippet limit what can be shown.
  • Unique, non-commodity content. Google's first tip for AI search.
  • Structured data that matches visible content.
  • Page experience, images and video. Plus Merchant Center and Business Profile.

What comes next

Agentic search: getting ready for AI agents

Agentic search is when an AI runs many searches and steps for a user before it answers or acts. OpenAI calls deep research an "agentic capability that conducts multi-step research" (Feb 2, 2025). Agents open more pages per task and check facts fast.

Agentic search optimization uses the same four layers, with extra weight on machine-readable facts:

  • Prices, specs and policies in HTML text, kept current. Consistent facts across your site and profiles.
  • Comparison and alternatives pages that answer "which one for my case."
  • Product data in Merchant Center and a complete Business Profile.

Measurement

How to measure AI search optimization results

Measure each engine on its own. For Google, use the Search Console Generative AI performance reports, live for all sites since Aug 31, 2026. For assistants, track a fixed prompt list in logged answers.

Google's reports, announced June 3, 2026, show impressions only, by page, country, device and date, for AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover (Google).

For ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude there is no first-party report, so use logged answers. Our sister site's AI visibility checker shows which engines cite your domain.

What to track each month

  • Citations per engine. Responses that cite your domain, never blended across engines.
  • Cited pages. The URLs to protect and refresh.
  • Domains cited next to you. Your competitors inside the answer.
  • Value of visits. Google advises overall value over clicks alone.

Avoid these

AI search optimization mistakes to avoid

The costly mistakes come from chasing AI tricks while the basics are broken. Google names the first two as harmful.

  • Making a page for every fan-out queryGoogle warns this can violate the scaled content abuse policy.
  • Buying or seeding mentionsGoogle says inauthentic mentions do not help.
  • Blocking AI crawlers by accidentAn old robots.txt rule can shut out a whole engine.
  • Blending engines into one numberAn average hides which engine is the problem.
  • Judging success by clicks aloneFewer clicks are expected. Track citations and the value of visits.

FAQ

AI search optimization FAQ

What is AI search optimization called?

It has no single name yet. GEO (generative engine optimization) and AEO (answer engine optimization) are the most common labels, and many teams just say AI SEO. Some writers use "search everywhere optimization." Google's guide treats all of it as SEO, so pick the term your team already uses.

How does AI search optimization work?

AI engines search before they answer. They split a question into related sub-queries, fetch pages, then write a reply that cites some of them. AI search optimization makes your pages easy to fetch and quote for those sub-queries. It also earns the outside mentions that lead engines to treat your brand as a source.

How do I optimize for AI search?

Work through four layers in order. Make sure engines can crawl, index and show your pages. Answer real questions early on each page. Earn genuine mentions on sites engines already cite. Then track each engine on its own, every month. The self-check above turns those layers into 15 yes or no questions.

Do ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews need different tactics?

They share a base, with different weighting. In an Ahrefs study of 15,000 long-tail queries, 28.6% of URLs Perplexity cited ranked in Google's top 10, against 8.0% for ChatGPT. AI Overviews sit at 37.9%. So Google rankings carry further in Perplexity and AI Overviews, while ChatGPT leans on sources outside the top results.

How do I rank in AI search results?

AI answers have no fixed rank, so aim to be cited. Cover the sub-questions around your topic, since fan-out reaches past page one. In Ahrefs' March 2026 data, 31.0% of AI Overview citations rank beyond position 100. Then keep cited pages fresh, because AI Overviews change every 2.15 days on average.

What is the best AI for search engine optimization?

No AI tool earns citations for you. Tools help you measure which engines cite you, which pages they use and who gets cited instead. Google notes that no third-party tool has access to its internal ranking or AI systems. Use a tool to find the gaps, then close them with the four layers.
